Tulsa Man creates props for local shows

A man from Tulsa left a gig in Las Vegas to move home and do what he loves! He creates props for some of the biggest shows in town! He takes us to his workshop.

“This was for the Tulsa Opera production of ‘Little Prince,'” said Bryan Johnson of Bryan Johnson Creative.

The objects you see may not be what they appear. But that is the magic of magic – the illusion.

“We needed something light,” Johnson said.

“This is a gift box with a piece of wood on it, with golf tees for the key,” Johnson said.

Even as a child, magic won Bryan Johnson’s heart.

“I got a Houdini All Out of the Hat Magic Set for Christmas when I was five,” Johnson said. The magic never really went away.

“I design, build and craft props for film, television and live entertainment,” Johnson said, “I realized there was magic in theater.”

He built a career by doing magic in the midst of everyday life.

“Every day is like a magic show. In props, you do something that doesn’t exist,” Johnson said. “It’s an upside-down soup bowl. The cap is a soda bottle.”

Passion can take you much further than you could ever dream of. Bryan’s passion has taken him across the country. Most recently he was in Las Vegas working with the Blue Man Group.

“I was her lead, props and special effects technician,” Johnson said.

After five years, he decided to leave town and return home.

“I’ve seen what Tulsa has become in the five short years since I’ve been away, and I wanted to come back and be a part of the growth of my homeland,” Johnson said.

He owns and operates Bryan Johnson Creative from a home workshop in town.

“I am currently working on my 18th opera with Tulsa Opera. If you had told me I would ever do an opera I would have told you were lying. Especially for the Blue Man Group to Opera,” Johnson said, “My grandma really got me into art from a young age—she always had opera in her background.”

There’s a little room for magic in all of our lives if we can only dream of it existing.

“If you’re unique — take advantage of that. That’s you,” Johnson said.
