Team selected for Cowichan Secondary School

The new Cowichan Secondary School has come one step closer to reality with the selection of the successful promoter in the design-build process.

Urban One Builders, together with the architecture firm HCMA, will deliver the 11,975 square meter new building for 1,100 students. It will include purpose-built learning communities with collaboration spaces and spaces for technology and innovation.

“We are very excited to welcome Urban One Builders to Cowichan Valley. Your innovative and carefully crafted design for Cowichan Secondary School will be an architectural centerpiece of our district and will serve our students in exceptional ways for decades to come, ”said Candace Spilsbury, Chair of the Cowichan Valley School District Education Committee.

The new earthquake-proof Cowichan Secondary School will be a three-story building with multiple architectural features that complement the surroundings and honor the unclaimed Quw’utsun land in which it is located. The grounds will offer beautiful outdoor study spaces that pay homage to the past while also providing spaces that allow students to focus on creating their future.

The board announced in May 2020 that an indigenous language and culture center will be the cornerstone of the neighborhood learning center, which will also house health and wellness facilities and a high-tech boardroom / meeting room.

The architectural features include:

  • Integrating the culture, heritage and design of Cowichan to connect the school with the rich history of the Hwulmuhw Mustimuh (first peoples) and this indigenous land.
  • Break up workspaces to encourage collaboration and creativity.
  • Outdoor meeting rooms so that learning can take place in different locations.
  • Incredible natural lighting and views to inspire and motivate students and staff alike.
  • Using wood to create strong, warm and welcoming spaces for everyone.
