Board of Governors approves new USF Strategic Plan I USF News

The University of South Florida reached a major milestone this week when the Florida Board of Governors (BOG) unanimously approved the university’s new five-year strategic plan, titled “In Pursuit of Excellence.” The approval of the BOG is the culmination of an extensive process that included outreach to many stakeholders including faculty, students, staff, alumni, business and community leaders throughout the Tampa Bay and Florida area.

“Our strategic plan serves as a roadmap to advance the University of South Florida’s mission over the next five years and positions the university as a powerful engine of prosperity for the future,” said USF President Rhea Law. “Our plan will continue to strengthen USF’s position among the top public universities in the country while serving our students and addressing critical challenges in our communities. We are confident that it will take our institution to new heights.”

The strategic plan builds on USF’s momentum as America’s fast-rising university and charts a course toward the quest to become one of the top 25 public universities and raises USF’s profile consistent with membership in the Association of American Universities . The Strategic Plan describes USF’s institutional mission, vision, aspirations, and values, and leverages the unique qualities of USF’s Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee campuses to focus on five strategic goals focused on the success of the Concentrate students at USF and beyond; Faculty excellence in research and innovation; partnerships and engagement with local, national and global impact; a diverse and inclusive community to learn from; and a strong, sustainable and adaptable financial base.

“I am pleased to see that USF’s strategic plan sets a course for the next five years to continue on its path of excellence and commitment to the success of its students, faculty, employees and the entire Tampa Bay area,” said BOG -Chairman Brian Lamb. “The plan raises the bar on performance and accountability goals and aligns closely with our strategic vision for the public university system.”

The plan aims to strengthen USF’s position as a catalyst for economic growth, including an annual economic impact in excess of $6 billion, and maximizes the university’s unique position and proximity to strategic partners and industries in the Tampa Bay area and in the state to a prosperous and sustainable future. It sets a blueprint for USF to make an even greater impact by nurturing a pipeline of talent into high-paying jobs in high-demand areas, conducting research that addresses Florida challenges, solving global problems and improving lives . The plan emphasizes mutually beneficial partnerships with business, industry, nonprofit organizations and government agencies, and supports Florida’s goal to be one of the top 10 economies in the world by 2030.

“Guided by our new strategic plan, the University of South Florida is well positioned to build on its momentum and serve as a magnet that draws top talent and innovation to the Tampa Bay area and the state of Florida,” said the USF Chairman Board of Trustees said Will Weatherford. “The future of this region and our university is very bright and very connected. I believe our best days are yet to come.”

In preparation for implementation of the plan on July 1, 2022, USF leadership will work with deans, academic and administrative leaders over the coming months to design targeted strategies and unit-based plans in support of USF’s institutional goals. Members of the USF community and beyond can learn more through a new website launched in support of the strategic plan.
