Abu Dhabi’s EAD launches Green Industries program

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced the launch of the Green Industries environmental labeling program.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the Green Industries environmental labeling program encourages industrial facilities to find innovative environmental protection solutions and adopt environmental best practices that result in increased environmental performance across all sectors by awarding an ‘eco-label’ to organizations with outstanding environmental performance.

dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: “The launch of ‘Green Industries’ is fully aligned with Abu Dhabi’s newly launched Industrial Strategy and falls within the framework of our comprehensive program to protect Abu Dhabi’s environmental benefits through an integrated strategy for sustainable development, integrated management of water resources and improvement of air quality and waste management.

“This multidisciplinary effort will help conserve biodiversity, increase environmental awareness and develop EAD’s institutional capabilities, as well as contribute to the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.”

The Green Industries program was launched at an event at EAD’s headquarters. During the event, EAD presented selected industrial companies with honorable recognition for their compliance with environmental laws, regulations and conditions.

Recognized companies include Emirates Global Aluminum, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah) and Al Wafi Food Products Company, part of the Wafi Group.

The program will give facilities a ‘green industries’ label based on environmental criteria broken down into four main categories. The first category is the demand-side management of resources, which aims to rationalize consumption while taking into account the optimal use of energy and resource conservation.

The second category relates to reducing pollution from primary and secondary operations.

The third category includes companies that EAD believes have an impeccable history of compliance with EAD requirements.

The program also includes an evaluation category that highlights innovative approaches by entities to protecting the environment, promoting economic growth and improving the quality of life for Abu Dhabi residents.

To be awarded the Green Industries eco-label, industries must meet criteria in all four categories.

The launch of the new program aims to recognize industrial plants that adopt and follow the best environmental standards during the manufacturing process, with the Green Industries label, awarded for a period of one year.

The agency has worked to improve its portfolio of compliance activities and now industrial facilities can apply for the label online through its Green Industries program. The agency reviews and evaluates applications and visits participating institutions to ensure they meet the programme’s criteria. The label is given to compliant entities to market their business and products.

Once launched, EAD will provide training to organizations in various industry sectors to educate them on how to meet the program’s criteria and application procedures. A wide media campaign will also be conducted to educate consumers about the program’s objectives and to recognize entities that have been awarded the Green Industries label.
